Context
How can we play to the strengths of two companies, to design something…
An in-class exercise in identifying key branding characteristics, I wanted to experiment with how brand identity and product design work together. My partner and I chose two brands we felt had overlapping values and an interesting audience: Subaru and Cotopaxi
The pairing we decided on.
Problem
Our challenge was to create a product for a brand pairing that felt, "logical, specific, and worth believing in". We were pushed to…
Just a few of the questions we asked ourselves about these brand's user, their attributes, characteristics, and what they were actually selling
My initial digital sketches of the car camping kit, and how it would be integrated into the typical use of these brand's products
The corresponding brand kit. We wanted to keep the vibrant colors Cotopaxi uses in their fabrics, but not stray too far from the jewel tones Subaru paints their cars. The happy medium was using the colors from Subaru's new Wilderness line, which uses a bold yellow (seen above). We also kept the professional sans serif typography.

Solution
Subaru gets users to their adventures and Cotopaxi supports users during the adventure- so what if we designed a product that connected those two ideas? The Wilderness Sleep System, the car camping collection we designed was made to allow users to use their Subaru to camp, but with the comfort and quality of Cotopaxi gear. The system includes a foldable cot, designed to fit the shape of a Subaru trunk, then a sleeping pad, down blanket, and pillow, all made of the same material as a Cotopaxi jacket, and packable in a Cotopaxi bag.
By putting Subaru and Cotopaxi together, the Wilderness Sleep System fosters adventure from door to door!
